Lunch: About 20-30 guests, volunteers and staff share lunch on Tues, Wed, Thurs and Sat from 12-1:30. This summer, volunteers and guests have set the table on outdoor picnic tables while off-site volunteers prepare and bring in food. We sit down to a family style meal and observe common rules of table etiquette in sharing food. We talk, we listen, we share our lives.

Post-Lunch Activity: Following lunch clean up, we have had some fantastic programs and outings this summer. We've done writing classes, bible study, contemplative prayer, and visited the Zoo and Pink Palace. For those not interested in a given program, there are games, conversation, and maybe even a nap. Again, talking and listening person-to-person is a big part of any activity we become engage in. Help in

Accessing Benefits: Some of our guests need help getting approved from a benefit or accessing a given benefit. We have a trained Social Worker that specializes in obtaining benefits. Further, for guests who have trouble managing their social security money we have individuals who act as Representative Payees to receive and distribute benefits. And, it is not all about money. An appointment to see a physician or mental health care provider can sometimes be a daunting task when you are alone. Door of Hope helps guests get to appointments, and volunteers and guests wait together for the needed service.

Filling Daily Needs: When you live on the streets your daily needs are no different from anyone else. Not only do we all need food, but clean clothes, a place to shower, and a bed to sleep on. Door of Hope provides information about local agencies that provide clothing and showers. For people recently moved from the streets to an apartment, we provide practical help such as a ride to and a lesson at the Laundromat. Finally, it is not uncommon for a volunteer and guest to attend worship services together.

Garden, Yard Work, and Homecare: Our goal is to help people reintegrate into our community. For some of us, gardening and homecare is part of our community identify. At Door of Hope, volunteers and guests work together in our gardens and on our property. Special goings-on are found on Saturday mornings at our Community Garden, 8:30-11, at 165 Merton. Conversation, coffee, and helping things grow is a prayer unto itself.

Access to Other Resources: The staff and guests of Door of Hope help one another gain knowledge of and access to a wide variety of resources, such as peer counselor training at the Peer Center, or a day trip to the Tennessee Mental Health Consumer Association conferences, food programs that distribute groceries for minimal fees, or help getting registered to vote.

Writing Group: Many of our guests at Door of Hope have joined us in a writing group.

Programs & Services
Programs and services offered by Door of Hope are varied and defined by the needs of our guests. In a nutshell, we at Door of Hope do whatever is within our ability to help guests reintegrate into our community. These "guests" are those without homes and those who have recently transitioned from living on the street to apartment life. Door of Hope might help one person access mental health benefits and help another structure their day as they adapt to apartment living. Programs and Services are summarized below, but truth-be-told what is done and the effect of people helping people goes way beyond such a listing.
